October 1, 2002 Plattsmouth Nebraska

Caught this short-lived storm near Plattsouth Nebraska, while the town I live in and the one south of it were getting raked by a severe wind/hail storm...very severe(figures). Looking sw.

Nasty tail cloud stretching ne.

The storm looking nw out my window as I try to get more east of it. I had to stop and shoot what I could because it was getting darker, it was beginning to gust out, and I was about to enter the bluffs.

Close cg as I sit and let the now shelf overtake me.

Below is a report for what was hitting my hometown as this is happening. Where I work was pretty hosed from this storm. Every trailer but one had the windows blown/busted out. The truck I drive there had at least 20 spots where the windshield was spiderwebbed. I found a larger than golf ball piece of hail in a small pile...the next day at NOON!!!!!!....no I'm not kidding. I was still without power as I woke for work that next day. The highway between Blair and Ft. Calhoun was pretty incredible. It was completely covered with leaves and/or branches almost the whole way. There was basically nothing left of the blinds in the office windows at work. One house in Ft. Calhoun was destroyed and I think part of another one was basically destroyed. Hmmm that sure would have been fun....oh well.

...STORM SURVEY DETAILS FROM DOUGLAS AND WASHINGTON COUNTIES...

THE STORMS THAT PRODUCED DAMAGE OVER PARTS OF DOUGLAS AND WASHINGTON

COUNTIES ON TUESDAY EVENING WERE DETERMINED TO HAVE BEEN CAUSED BY

DOWNBURST WINDS. A DOWNBURST IS AN INTENSE DOWNDRAFT IN A

THUNDERSTORM THAT CREATES AN OUTFLOW OF DAMAGING WINDS. THE WINDS

IN A DOWNBURST CAN REACH AS HIGH AS 150 MPH.

A DAMAGE SURVEY CONDUCTED BY THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE REVEALS

TWO DISTINCT DAMAGE PATHS. THE FIRST PATH BEGAN ABOUT 2 MILES

NORTHWEST OF ELKHORN. THE PATH...WHICH WAS BETWEEN 2 TO 3 MILES

WIDE...CONTINUED NORTH-NORTHEAST TO ABOUT ONE MILE WEST OF

BENNINGTON AND 3/4 MILE SOUTH OF WASHINGTON.

THE SECOND PATH BEGAN IN THE VICINITY OF STANDING BEAR LAKE AND THEN

TRACKED NORTHEAST TO FORT CALHOUN AND THE SOUTHERN EDGE OF BLAIR.

THIS PATH STARTED NARROW...WITH A PATH WIDTH OF 2 MILES AND ENDED

WIDE...WITH A PATH WIDTH OF 5 TO 6 MILES. THE MOST INTENSE WIND

DAMAGE WAS IN THE FORT CALHOUN AREA WHERE WINDS MAY HAVE EXCEEDED

100 MPH.

MUCH OF THE WIND DAMAGE WAS FALLEN TREES. HOWEVER SOME HOMES WERE

DAMAGED BY TREES OR HAD ROOF DAMAGE. ONE HOME NORTHWEST OF FORT

CALHOUN LOST ITS ENTIRE ROOF...PARTS OF THE OUTER WALL AND A

GARAGE. SEVERE DAMAGE TO HOME SIDING AND WINDOWS OCCURRED FROM THE

WIND-DRIVEN HAILSTONES.
