July 5, 2003 Brewster Nebraska Supercell
Heading south near Brewster. This is a little storm that fromed infront of our main one to the west, as we drop south a bit. This storm has just broken my windshiled, right before this capture. Amos is up the road a bit. |
We decide not to take this slick, muddy road. I know I would have gotten stuck as I could barely back up the block or so I was onto it. Note the hail smackage to my windsheild. |

Radar image from this time frame. The pic is of the western most supercell near Valentine. I heard via the paper that numerous car windsheilds were busted out from the baseball hail at this time. The small storm that broke my windsheild is the one in the middle in the radar image, the tiny flying eagle(v-notch). Notice the se storm now has a hook on it and is tornado warned. We lost data after this and really had to try hard not to break off and go for that eastern sup.

Dangerous inflow winds were included in the tornado warning on this storm. You don't hear that every day(I never have). |

As we dropped south the storm really took on a cool look. Nice banding going on around the storm. |
The radar image is same time as the pic below. We should have been a bit more aware of this storm's structure. Notice the hook is now gone on that eastern storm. It's a good thing we didn't break off this one for it. |

North of Brewster about 10 miles, trying to figure out if she is done or what. She didn't look done but did seem undercut a good bit. |
Nice beavertail streaming west into the updraft base. The towers along the gustfront/rfd above us were quite intense at this time. |

Looking south. |

Bit of a gap here but the same spot. We got SLAMMED by the rfd winds. We had decided to let it overtake us and experience what she had. Well, turns out maybe that wasn't the smartest thing to do. A new tornado warning was issued right on top of us as crap is flying sideways and the thing all the sudden becomes totally rain-wrapped. This still is looking east at this very intense area that had passed just to our north. You could see white precip(hail) moving rapidly se, very much horizontal as those trees over there bent way over. It was quite intense as this happend.

The coolest part of the day was yet to happen. Neither one of us had ever seen a sky like this. The blue was like a view from some other planet-simply amazing. |

Looking west to the east of Brewster. |

This was most certainly the most intense convection I've ever seen. I was shocked at just how quickly the mass was rising. |
