October 25, 2005 Blair, NE Morning River Fog

Well it is rare I'm up very early, but I was supposed to be at my parent's house for a delivery at 8:30. So my alarm goes off and man I did not want to get out of bed. I got out anyway. I knew one of two things would happen. Either my dad would be there for the delivery anyway or they would not be coming today. It is always something. Before I go out the door I notice the frost on the grass so I grab my camera incase there is some cool photo op out there. Not long into my drive I see the river is very very foggy(water still somewhat warm and the morning low was 19...a record low I think). So two things have happened to make the following images possible, one I had to get up and two it was very very cold for late October. Now I just needed one of those other two things to happen. And sure enough I get out there and my dad is there for the delivery anyway. I was glad because I almost skipped out anyway because of the cool scene I was now seeing.

These first two pictures were shot up above my parent's house out in the hills. We were right under the middle of the high pressure and I can assure you there were no other clouds around. All those in the first pic are of the fog along the river with the bubbling ones coming from the cargill corn milling plant. It was kind of cool to see that billowing up above this fog. In the pic here you can barely make out some tree tops down there in the soup.

I decide to run down this long road towards the highway and see if I could find some rays via the trees. I didn't have much luck. I also ran myself out of pretty much any photo ops. So back up this long hill I go. I bet the round trip run was about 1 mile.

So I'm running my butt off and can barely make it back up this hill(without a rest). My legs were completely fatigued(which I have paid for the last couple days....soooooo sore, it hurts to just walk). This is up one hill to a flat portion. Cool scene out there but just too many obstacles around me to get much of it. I don't stick around long as I have to run run run to not miss the show. I really needed someplace perfect to shoot this.

Back up to the top.

Right above the parent's house about to head down to the river.

I really wasted this cool spot on my way to the river. There was just too much traffic around here to get a really cool shot. I'm looking due west and the area to the left here was awesome. I passed it up, thinking that maybe the cemetary on the other side of town might be close enough to the river. Well after some driving I found it wasn't quite close enough to have the good fog.

I really wanted rays and almost did not go down to the river. I go to skip the option/turn and part way through the turn I change my mind and decide to run down to the river. Well good thing I did that.

It was so sweet down there. Where I parked I could not even see the train bridge. I almost didn't bother walking down to the boat ramp to get closer. Good thing I did. The amount of fog was just right. All I had to do was make sure the sun was not blowing out. This wasn't too bad when it was super foggy. As it started to let up it was a bit harder getting a decent exposure.

I'm not sure if I like this shot or not. I feel I wasted the dock into the fog scene a bit.

I was kind of surprised at how fast of a shutter/exposure I needed in this soup. It seemed like I was always 1/2500 to 1/4000 and at F8-F11 with an ISO of 100.

I leave the boat ramp and head over to the rocks. When the sun was less fogged out there was no other choice but to block it out with something.

Cropped.

I can't believe there wasn't a train for the whole time I was down there. This track seems to have them every 15 minutes, sometimes quicker. It would have been a sweet shot, that is for sure. I plan to get it on another day...jinx.

Train.....a bit late. Around 10 a.m. the air had warmed up enough the fog went bye bye.
