November 6, 2005 Pets with new canon 50mm F/1.8

When I picked up the neutral density filters I also grabbed the much needed canon 50mm F/1.8 prime. All I had was my canon 17-40L. I'm not a fan of flashes at all but did realize there would be times I'd want to use it with a flash. The 17-40L is simply too long of a lens for the flash on the rebel. You get annoying lens shadow with it. So instead of wasting money on some new flash I got the 50mm. I wanted the lens anyway as it is sharp(beings it is a prime) and it is fast at F/1.8. It is also only $70 so it really made sense. Well I'm glad I picked it up as it is kind of fun. Here is the first shot with it. There was no F/1.8'ing this one though, lol.

Shooting the dogs at dusk it quickly became apparent how useful this lens will be. At ISO 100 I could still hand hold anything with no real problems. ISO 200 or 400 and even their own movement becomes a non-issue.

The rapid blur with the low apperature is nice as well.

Now this is what I think I will really love about being able to get down to F/1.8. I can't stand flashes. Maybe I'm too lazy to learn how to make things look more natural with them. Not using one is one way. It was now pretty dark outside and all I had here was indoor lighting. At 1600 ISO and at F1.8 I can hand hold indoor shots. Yeah noise is an issue at high high iso's but when there is so much contrast and detail it isn't as much of one. Sky shots I pretty much won't go over 100 ISO. This stuff though it is more forgiving.

Siss here loves to race across the room at full speed and zoom into this 12 pack coke box.

I was surprised how long she sat in there for me.

She isn't hissing here, she is yawning. Interesting blue in her eyes. Not sure why it blue-eyed here instead of red. Maybe it has something to do with the 1600 ISO.

She'd roll around in it a bit while the other cat, Sally, jumped on the box. They are odd, one second they'll be biting one another and then shortly thereafter they'll be licking each other's face. I've actually seem them switch while still holding onto each other.

Siss pondering going back in for more.

I should have moved the flap, ah well. This camera is not real good at focusing in lower light. I could not get it to lock on her face. I got it to lock on her side, flipped it to manual focus and then slid back as much as I thought I was back from her face.

Everyone is tired now.

"You can go back home now".
