May 24, 2005 Bartlett Nebraska Wind and Hail

I had decided not to chase this day as it would have required a trip all the way to eastern CO for one day and it was not looking to be worth it. North winds over most of western KS talked me out of making the trip. Ended up it would have been a decent day there. Ah well. I saw this boundary on satellite in central NE and it got me out the door. I was "on" the first real storm of the day, nw of Albion but thanks to my gps not wanting to work I opted out of the sandhills gravel roads. Instead I screwed around trying to figure out its movement for about an hour. My only two options were not direct and the movement was rather unclear. I realized, well, it just wasn't ever going to organize or move. A cell to the south grabbed my attention as it was more isolated. Well it was shriveling up when I got to it, near Ord. They would do this over and over. I think the problem was too much directional shear as the first anvil I saw was stretching almost straight se into se inflow surface winds. I didn't like it the second I saw it but what was I to do at that point. I thought they would have been more flattened out by this point and more westerly.

I was ready to go home really early while watching that tiny thing by Ord. That same area up in Wheeler county was backbuilding over and over in the same spot and was now intense again, so north I went.

It's not good when this is the lowest base of the day. This was expected though with such crappy dews. I hoped for more structure however.

I'm almost to Bartlett NE here. I could see some sheets of rain moving rapidly south and couldn't help myself. I had to go play in it. If there isn't much structure I figure the only thing to do is see how much crap one can get into.

South side of Bartlett in someone's driveway. Severe winds with less than severe hail.
