June 13, 2005 Des Moines Iowa Supercell

Waaaayyyy too much driving for this stuff today. I was never much further east than Des Moines but somehow managed to drive 600 miles. I chased garbage for a couple of hours before getting south to the first real storm. It was tiny on xm as I got a view of its base in nw Des Moines. The base looked good and the area it was in was favorable for the storm to intensify.

It quickly strengthens into an HP hailer, spitting out some nasty cgs as it does so. These first shots are right where the interstate turns east, on the nw side of Des Moines, looking sw in both. Note the white hail core entering this area north of the updraft base. I leave right after this shot and just in time.

I didn't have far to go to get on the interstate. Had I not made the two stop lights, I'm guessing I'd have gotten slowed up in traffic in this hail. I knew I'd clear it fairly quickly once moving east but people were already pulling over under the overpasses and starting to snarl things up.

Heading north out of Des Moines on the interstate. There was a low nasty tail cloud in the hail core. View sw.

Looking more westerly here, about to head up a sw-ne highway.

Heading ne looking west. It looked pretty good on radar till about this point. I should have sampled it here but got pulled south by more tornado warnings. This was the story of my day. Getting suckered futher and further south over and over, only to be 'too late' but in time for a new tor warning south of that one.

I'm se of Des Moines, calling it a day once again. This precip core got quite intense and got me wondering again as things weren't lining out on radar like they seemed they were going to. View is se.

It was about this time the storm sw of this one got tornado warned and off I went again.

The tornado warned storm from near the town of Pella.
