November 1, 2006 Desoto Bend Iowa
|
With forecasted lows in the mid-teens and light winds I decided I'd wake up early and see if there was any fog near the Missouri River and Desoto Bend Lake. The hope was there would be and some of it would bank up against the bluffs. I have been wanting to shoot fog from above on Murray Hill ever since I found that place. I get to the Missouri and see there is very little fog. I was like, well waking up this early was pointless. I drive further towards Desoto Bend and see there is a fair amount of fog there, coming off the lake. I turn north for Murray Hill wondering if I'm wasting the good photo ops closer at Desoto Bend. Part way there I can see there is indeed fog banking up against the bluffs. Well closer to Murray Hill there's really no fog to be found. I flip around in the parking lot at the bottom of the hill....grrrrrr. It's now right at sunrise and I'm wondering how long the fog will last back at the lake. On the way back south I see some fog but each time I'd drive closer to it it would "dissapear". It was still there, but it was so thin that you'd only really see it when you looked from a distance. Too bad it wasn't thicker as it would have also created some thick frost, beings it was right around 15 degrees out. Frustrated with the vanishing fog near the bluffs I head for the lake. I get to highway 30 and am right between the east and the west entrance to the refuge(Desoto Bend). I almost turned west and went in that entrance. Instead I turned east at the last second to try the Wilson Island entrance. Had I not done this I would not have found the best photo op of the entire morning. The above image is a farm east of the lake. There was just enough fog here to show the sun rays.

Same farm as above. I believe I had just backed up from the first spot.

Further south a bit and I found another cool setting. Too bad the waters have already cooled down so much. There would be a lot more fog and frost here with temps at 15 if the waters were a bit warmer.

Wider shot of the same scene. There was quite a bit of frost on the ground pretty much everywhere I went this morning.

After shooting a few of the farm on the east side I decided to head into the refuge. This time of year kind of sucks there as they close down the lake and many of the roads in there. I found this one trail I briefly tried to walk(just right of this shot).

|
I should have been here from the start as the fog has already faded quite a bit since the time I first drove past. I took the trail hoping it went closer to the lake, but I turned back about halfway since I was freezing. I evidently wasn't dressed well enough for 15F. My leg muscles were so cold they felt like they were about to freeze. I'm not sure I remember them feeling quite like that before.

Here is a shot of the trail part way in. More fog would have been nice!

I found another trail at the visitor center(thanks to my sister on the cell phone) that likely would have been perfect, had I been there from the start. It runs right along the lake. Darn it. I walked all of this one(a mile) and did not freeze as bad as earlier. |
