December 29-31, 2006 Winter Storm Chase 30th

Well, it is now the following day, the 30th.  A severe outbreak happens in TX this day and really cut off some of the moisture for this area.  The snow ended around midnight the night before and never started again till after dark this day.  I was like, well this sucks.  So I left the motel and drove to Eustis, then to Elwood, up to Lexington, and back to Cozad.  These day shots are all between Eustis and Elwood.

I saw the radar estimate was pegged through this area right here and that is half the reason I drove down here.  They got freezing rain here, along with some snow and some sleet.  The highway was quite icy.

This was about the thickest the ice got around here...pretty thick!  As thick as it was here, this would be nothing as you'll see.  I don't know if areas further east recieved any ice from the first night, they very well could have, but the coming night is what nails them.

Night now, back at the motel and precip has finally resumed. It was sleeting heavily here now.  There was already an accident on I80 which quickly backed up traffic.

When I first arrived at this hotel I thought, cool, they put a windmill up for me! It was snowing very heavily now and made shooting stills somewhat challenging.  Thank god for 1600 ISO and an F1.8 lens.

A couple people were now standing in the doorway, likely wondering what the hell was wrong with me.

This is the night south central NE is getting a very severe ice storm(worst most can remember here...turned the area into a widespread disaster area).  Southwest KS and eastern CO were getting the brunt of the ice during the day.
