March 30 se KS Tornadic Supercell

Alright, this will probably be a quick write up as I'm a bit behind on things. This first image is west of Concordia KS looking north at a fat tower.

I drop south to a tornado warned storm that moves just nw of Salina. It was actually rotating fairly well in the base. It was quite windy with winds gusting over 40 mph at this time.

I leave my spot and head back north towards Concordia. The storm wasn't hanging around very long and soon leaves me in the dust.

Looking north at the "plow". I get in hail up the road a bit right where I turn east. It stays tornado warned as it races to NE.

I'm now on I-70 near Junction City KS. Before this I intercepted a tornado warned storm at Alma that was rather small by this time. It was moving up behind the lead line of convection, which was killing its inflow air. So it races ne of me and dies as it does so. I then head west to this point here. This line had one tornado warned storm which is now a linear mess.

It did offer a very nice shelf. I love being under these big, deep, arcing shelfs. This is looking north.

Looking south.

South again from the same location.

I head east with it rather depressed how crappy the day is turning out.

I notice on xm that the dryline is still around Wichita and the lead line isn't too far south to kill info if anything was to pop back west off the dryline. So when I get to Topeka I decide to head south incase something pops back there. Not long into the drive a cell goes up near Wichita. Here is the storm viewed from a location a few miles north of Buffalo KS.

It too wasn't very good looking. It was sending hail well downstream of the updraft base.

I found an open area to pull over and went up a little road. It was there I saw Darin Brunin, Dick McGowan and Eric B'Hymer. It is funny how you see people you know far far from their homes when chasing. I mean it was just this little tiny road. I get out to talk to them and that is when the first stone smacks the ground right by us. There was no precip at all then bam that stone hits. I was like, ok, I'm going back to my car. I then moved back to the highway. Here is a video grab of the hail and one stone breaking(lower left). It was fun watching them splash in the pond.

Here is a view of the linear base with precip surging east behind it(looking sw).

We noted this wall cloud forming just before this. Well it got linearish and not great looking so I guess we blew it off. The hail coming was a bit distracting as well. The whole thing looked like it was taking a crap and about to bow east hard.

This is looking north. Dick, Darin and Eric are up there on the shoulder. Darin measured one stone 2.25 inches in diameter. One hit my back window and made that sound where you know it about broke it. Anyway, look right above the highway down the road all the way. We know a tornado formed right now based on other chaser's images and the funnel we soon see. That is the tornado forming and we didn't even notice it. I guess the hail was that distracting.

As we go east we see it roping out to the north(just right of center). From the time we leave to head into Buffalo to head east till this point is likely less than 5 minutes. Doh, too bad we weren't paying more attention and/or ne of the updraft base still(or even east).

So anyway, we continue east to Chanute. This image is a video grab as we go north out of town. It now had that "I want to tornado soon" look to it. It had some long inflow bands going se of it as well as a nice RFD notch. If you look close, just left of the road, you can see the back of the updraft and the rfd cut. .

We go north to Iola and as we turn to go east they report a tornado near La Harpe, just east of us a couple miles. We were driving in the core right behind the updraft punching east. I kept looking for a tornado but wasn't seeing anything. I kept thinking the area just north of the highway would be the most likely area. Then I noticed this darker object in there just north of the highway near La Harpe.

I contrasted the heck out of the above image and this is what I get. This even seemed to have part of the updraft curling back south to the west of it like you'd normall see around a tornado. I can't say for sure if it was or wasn't the reported tornado but I'm highly suspicious that it could have been. It had a whole lot of rain around it, whatever it was.

Looking west near Moran I think. It was quickly turning to junk(this is scud south along the gust front of the storm).
