May 23, 2006 sc NE Mammatus/Lightning

Not a whole lot to type about this one. I wanted more isolated action so I opted for far sc NE. The first storm here is north of Red Cloud NE county or so I guess.

After messing with a couple small cells ahead of the developing line I decided I had better go play in the line for high winds or something. So far on this chase all I had to show for it was a couple tower images and I didn't want it to end this way. I was losing light so made the fast dash back north for the line with reported 80+ mph winds. The next image is the bottom of the shelf cloud in the area. It too wasn't all that interesting to take pictures of.

As the sun started to get lower I thought about the likely mammatus show behind the storms. I figured the structure out front was lacking anyway that I might as well try and get west of the storms before all light was gone. Not far into the drive west this rather cool scene unfolded just to my south. One of those small cells was moving ne ahead of this line and about to be eaten. Well the core of that contrasted well with the filtered orange lighting from the setting sun and precip under the shelf. You can see the core of that little cell to the left of the next image.

I video taped the high winds right behind that shelf and then raced west in the rain. I could start to see the mammatus and quickly realized they were very nice. Now the trick was to get west out of some lower clouds that seem to always hinder good mammatus viewing. So west I went, on and on. I pull over on this small road and snap a couple quick images incase the lighting on them went bye bye for good soon. In doing so I almost get stuck. Had I pulled futher onto this road and not just had my front wheels on it I certainly would have. I stopped and the front of my car slid sideways. Thankfuly my back tires were still on the pavement.

I went west some more and found a good spot to shoot them in the developing twilight. Twilight light is the best there is for still photography.

I was stopped in this location for quite a while shooting this scene. I soon realized just how good of a lightning show was now going on. It was basically constant flashing. I drove east till I was just west of Lincoln NE and shot the rest of the images there. Being near city lights can really help light up the clouds in the long exposures. Chasing the back of this storm system saved an otherwise wasted chase day. It pays to always be thinking of what is likely putting on the best show at the time and get to it. If you're ever on a storm or storms and they don't really move very far I'd be certain to go looking for mammatus as you might see some crazy ones. These aren't what I'm talking about either.
