This is certainly going to take a lot more practice, doing this by myself like this. I mount the camera to a tripod, use a cable release, and play with the cats at the same time. I am not able to hold and move the camera at all while doing this. So having the cats framed is a big enough challenge. Getting them in focus is another. Lower light inside my aparment forces me to use F1.8 on my 50mm canon lens. I have to use that to keep the shutter fast. Well F1.8 leaves you a very shallow depth of field, or area that is in focus. You have maybe an inch of room to be in focus. If the cat's face is behind or ahead of that spot, they'll be soft. To use auto focus doing this, one has to set it to AI Servo. Under that setting it will keep focusing while holding the shutter halfway down. Otherwise you push it and it does the focus once and stops. You also have to change your metering/focus point to one spot. If they are all highlighted and working, then your focus will be bouncing all over various objects. I'm finding the autofocus to be just too slow in most cases. That and it's about impossible to keep the exact metering point on the cat's face if you aren't even looking through the camera and he/she is moving around. The other route is to focus on a spot, then turn the focus off to manual. Then just be sure to keep the cat's action in that area. That seems the best route to do this. Anyway, here are some from the first trial.
