January 17th and 19th, 2008 Sunrise and Steamy Icy River

Morning of the 17th above, after a tiny snowstorm. I hoped for sundogs or pillars or something cool. I got a small beam/pillar and that was about it.

Some low clouds moved in making for at least a little more interesting outing.

Fast-forward 2 days, morning on the 19th now. It was COLD out. I think the low in the area was -15F. This sort of air makes hand-holding a zoom lens rather tough. I could not stop shaking. Also, it doesn't take long for the gloveless hand to encounter pain. I mean you know it's damn cold when a river of freaking ice is all steamy. Jump in, it looks warm!

I drove to another spot along the river and saw these turkeys in the trees. I'm not sure if they normally do that, or if it was the cold(not that tree tops are any warmer I guess). I've seen turkey's fly into trees while running from the dogs, but not sure I've seen them just hanging out(or sleeping?) there for no apparent reason. I counted over 50 of them in one picture.

Well that other spot didn't have as much steam, so I went back where I was....and froze some more trying to shoot the scene.

I just about fell in once. It doesn't appear to start off too shallow along the edge either.

Just a fairly strange scene I guess.

I think it was when I was trying to get this angle that I about fell in. I'm guessing one could ride a chunk like the one seen in the above picture. I think the current on the Missouri is around 7 mph. It's really strange to be driving on the road that runs along it and watch the ice. If you are driving with it or against it, it never looks like it is moving till you stop. I will watch and swear that ice is not moving, only to stop and see that it sure is. Looks like maybe one more shot at ice steam Thursday morning, before things start to finally warm up.

Oh yeah, there were a ton of these steam-nadoes. Probably hard to see here, but it is dead center...or a hair left of dead center I guess.
