March 1st, 6th, and 7th, 2008 Eagles (and a couple Geese) Page 1

Page 1 Page 2

The first two here are from March 1st at Desoto Bend. I didn't get anything worth posting till sunset. I saw the Geese in the field and tried to shoot them with the sun. It didn't work until a group came in to land.

This now from March 6th, near town in eastern Nebraska. I was told about several eagles hanging out here feeding on something. I guess a week before, 18 were seen in this field. There were now what I'd guess to be 8 in the area. There are 5 in the above shot, and one more lower in the tree I didn't even see at the time. The other 3 are towards the top behind the tree on the hill. They seemed fairly easily spooked. My car got those in the tree to fly off.

These are mostly cropped in to some degree. Unless you can get one to fly towards you, it's about impossible to get one to fill a frame. I found the best way to shoot these were with the focus set to AI Servo, so that it keeps focusing as you hold the shutter halfway down. The other thing is to change the metering/focusing point to just one, and have it be the center one. That will keep you from focusing on something else if the bird is near trees. There's another useful tool, at least on the Canon 100-400L. There's a switch on the side where you can let it focus from like 1 meter or so(it's minimum distance, whatever it is) out to infinity. That'd be a sort of normal mode. Then there's an option next to it to have it only go back to like 6 meters out and out to infinity. That will keep the lens from hunting too far back when it's lost trying to find something to focus on. So if you have the lens and shoot birds with autofocus, I'd make sure to set it to that. Otherwise when it hunts for focus it will bring it all the way back to the minimum distance, wasting time.

This one has a talon full of something(flesh and dirt).

The little specs to the right in the sky are birds. They're just way past the point it's focused on the eagle.
