I went back the following day, earlier in the morning at like 9. I wasn't seeing them anywhere. I was in the slow process of giving up when I spotted them through some trees, right off the road. I could see 5 of them in a small area. It was really cold out, so they were soaking up the morning sun on that side. They didn't like the sound my car made, so they wound up taking off. So I took off. I came back afternoon and had about as much luck...not much. I didn't want to come back a third time, but since it was after 4 when I saw them the day before, I thought it might be a better time of day.

Thanks to someone at a nearby house backing out their driveway to get the mail I got this shot. It flushed him from the trees in their driveway. He actually had two buddies with him, but they'd already flew off...the wrong way. This one wasn't that far away at all, but I still had to crop into the picture for this one.

I snuck around this tree line earlier in the day, and they flew off before I could get anything decent. This time I was a little sneakier. Most flew before I got to a viewing spot, but this one remained, while his buddies circled around and up.

I worried on his 5th pass, looking right at me each time. The 4 others were now above him circling too, without flying out at all, other than up. It felt like I had the eyes of all 5 on me, which I'm guessing I did.

It was rather hard to get these, even with them passing one another often. By the time you saw them do it through the lens they were leaving the frame again. You had to sort of guess which ones would do it, then follow one till the other came in...then snap real quick.

It was really cool as 5 of them circled above me. I never could get all 5 in the shot at once, even backing out to 100mm like I am in these. I think there are 4 different ones in this 4 frame gif as one would circle out as another came in...and that 5th one, the lowest one, off to the side coming around again.
Jeremy Ludin has some much better eagle pictures from a dam in eastern IA here. I need to get to a dam! |
