June 19, 2008 Badlands, South Dakota - Day Shots

One of the few bolts I was able to get. The rain was pissing me off, even with it blowing east and me facing east out the window. The tripod is on my seat/lap as I shoot out the open window. The biggest problem was lack of good CGs, as is often the case with linear storm systems. You can barely see grass at the bottom of the shot. Just past that is a big cliff. My brain works this way. I have to think what is the worst that could happen in any given situation and then wonder about it. It was pretty windy with the line, and I thought, yeah it'd suck if it was able to slide my car sideways. Had the pavement been over more, I would have been even closer to the edge though. I wanted a bolt to hit the darn cliff right there.

The sun is up, so the sky begins to lighten a bit much for lightning shots.

I made my way east to the visitor center again, this time going north of there for the first time. This deer was very friendly, or at least not afraid of people. He's right next to the road, and I'm on the road.

I don't know what my favorite area of the park would be, but the ne entrance is up there on the list. What was amazing to me was the ability for areas to look different and be special then in their own ways. The whole thing was just a constant "wow" fest....or a "dude" fest. I said "dude" far too many times, I know that.

I'm reminded of why I have a love-hate relationship with my Canon 100-400L. It's capable of very sharp images. To get them though, you have to be horribly precise with your manual focus adjusting. You have to be right on. As soon as you turn it and think it is sharp sharp, you are going back away from sharp. It's just not real easy to get it on the small tack sharp area. Several of mine with it are a little soft. At least I didn't screw up many of the fog storm ones. I did a couple though.

LOL, the things that stick out later, after the fact. I never noticed this while taking this photo. Ever seen Little Shop of Horrors? Look at the lower middle part of the above picture, in the V of that wall. It looks like one of those man eating plants in that movie! That really bugs me now, lol. I can't even see it how it is supposed to be, grass and rock. I just see the plant mouth. It's just funny that you don't see it at the time, only later when you look at the pictures.

This was at the Big Badlands Overlook north of the visitor center. The view there was amazing. I had the 100-400L on, saw the bird flying and just waited till it was up above the rocks.

Sun halo.

We come in peace. She walked in front of my car and right away it jumped out as looking a bit like she had a space suit on, in front of this strange strange land.

I got the first one, then this one with the focus on her, then I attempted to stop the lens way down for a bigger depth of field so her and the background would be in focus. Well she already turned back before I could get the shot. Some just don't soak it in, as her and the guy down to the right(his head anyway) were only there looking for maybe 15 seconds. I wanted to ask her if she would go face the rocks again, but this time hold up Spock's hand sign.

I will certainly be going back to the Badlands again. I really want to go with no moon and do star trails. The longer nights of the fall would help too, even if it will be colder out.
